Q & A WITH JAYNEE PENNY

Jaynee Penny shows that it’s never too late to choose to follow your passion, and to believe in yourself when trying out new projects. Beginning her journey in the working world as a lawyer, Jaynee soon realised this wasn’t the life she envisioned for herself and decided that taking a step sideways would be more beneficial for where she was heading. That proved to be true, as Jaynee is now the Global Sales Director of Triangl Swimwear, and has taken the brand to new heights. We sat down and asked about her tips and tricks about working life and how to follow your dreams.

1. Where were you born and raised?

Born and raised in Sydney, spending majority of my youth in the Western Suburbs of Parramatta.

2. Have you always been a fashion lover?

I haven’t necessarily always loved or followed fashion however I LOVE the way you can express yourself through fashion.

3. How was your experience as a lawyer, can you tell us a bit about that and your work prior to Triangl?

The reason I ended up in fashion was purely as a result of my experience as a lawyer! Does that explain it enough for you? haha

I worked at a mid-tier firm in the area of International Business. My boss was unapproachable, my hours were long (I’m talking 7 am – 9 pm with no lunch break) and I received a lot of unnecessary negative feedback about my work. My taste as a lawyer was very influenced by this one man, and in hindsight, I can’t thank him enough! *side note, after I left, no one lasted longer than 6 months working for this guy!!

I made the tough decision (financially) to leave the law profession, and I began my journey in fashion as a Buyer’s Administration Assistant at General Pants (I previously worked in store during my study). From there, I worked my way up through the business and left as a Buyer of the biggest category in the business. I took a job at a start up ecomm store, Peppermayo, and then moved to the role of Head of Womenswear Buying at Glue Store.

4. Can you tell us about your role at Triangl and the path you took to get there?

My role at TRIANGL has grown since coming on board in 2019. We have an extremely small team so it’s all hands on deck. My responsibilities include design and product development, wholesale, production of shoots, retail operations and merchandise planning.

To land the role at TRIANGL, I had a few interviews with key team members and the Director; the process was extremely open and honest making the role work for both parties.

Initially, I turned the role down – almost the silliest thing I’ve ever done!!

5. Career highlight?

It may seem small, but working for a brand that I love and am passionate about has been the greatest highlight. Work doesn’t feel like work!

6. Best campaign you’ve ever worked on?

It’s a close tie between our Casa Fantasia collection that was shot in Formentera and our Vacay in Capri collection – both shot by Carly Dame.

Can check them out here https://triangl.com/blogs/campaign

7. Top career tip?

Being a hard worker with a good attitude will get you far.

8. Favourite way to spend a weekend?

A solid beach session (with a good book and good snacks), followed by a fish and chip dinner to watch the sunset.

9. Top tips for self love?

Do something that makes you feel good, daily. For me, that’s a walk, run or some form of exercise.

Don’t compare yourself to other people – we all have our own struggles and imperfections. Instagram is definitely a highlight reel!

10. If you could tell your younger self anything, what would it be?

I’ve actually really enjoyed my journey and life experiences and can say I live with no regret. So the only thing I’d tell my younger self is to enjoy the journey.
